Symptoms

Nipah Virus (NiV) symptoms usually appear 4 -14 days following exposure. The virus can manifest in mild or severe symptoms, including encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and death. However, the symptoms typically include 3-14 days of fever and headache, as well as cough, sore throat, and difficulty breathing. If the patient develops encephalitis, symptoms may include drowsiness, disorientation, and mental confusion, which could develop into a coma within 24-48 hours.

Symptoms may initially include:

  • Fever

  • Headache

  • Cough

  • Sore throat

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Vomiting

Severe Symptoms may follow, including:

  • Disorientation, drowsiness, or confusion

  • Seizures

  • Coma

  • Brain swelling (encephalitis)

Reports have also shown dormant or latent infections, causing symptoms and at times, death, much after exposure. Those can range from months to years after exposure.
